"Collections Management" Presentation
Where: Fort Laramie National Historic Site - Visitor Center Auditorium
Date: Sunday, November 9, 2008
Time: 2:00 pm
Refreshments will be served
Hope you can make our Annual Membership Meeting this coming Sunday! Annual Reports will be given, new Board Members will be announced, and plans for the coming year will be discussed.
Following the business portion of the meeting and refreshments, we will have a special program on "Collections Management" given by Sarah Allen. Sarah is a new Fort Laramie National Historic Site (FLNHS) museum staff employee. She comes to FLNHS from Knife River Indian Villages NHS in North Dakota and has 13 years experience in collections management. The program she will present, "Collections Management: What We Do and Why We Do It" will be an overview of some of the important aspects of caring for a collection such as the one here at FLNHS. You'll find out where the National Park Service fits into the museum world, the problems faced by a site such as Fort Laramie, how the collections are monitored, the issues dealt with, and why they are issues to begin with. You'll also learn why the museum staff wears gloves, why the sun is one of the worst enemies we have, and how people contribute both to the preservation and destruction of objects.
All regularly priced merchandise will be marked down 10%. If you are a FLHA Member or become one, you will receive an additional 15% off-- for a 25% reduction! It will be a great time to see all our new items and get your Christmas shopping started!
