Embroidery Kit

$12.99

Embroidery is the art of decorating fabric with a needle and thread. Unlike sewing, which has the practical purpose of holding pieces of cloth together, and which is most admired when it is most invisible on the finished work, embroidery is stitching meant to be seen and admired.

No one knows when the first embroidery was done, but very old examples have been found from ancient times in Egypt, Europe, and China.

Embroidery in America was done mainly by little girls and young women. Most married women were too busy sewing clothes for their family and running their households to have extra time for decorative work. Girls as young as five or six learned their numbers, the alphabet, and how to sew by embroidering letters and numbers onto cloths called marking samplers. Teenage girls who were lucky enough to continue their schooling, often made a second, more intricate sampler with a stitched verse and needlework picture that would be framed and hung in the parlor. Young girls even made embroidered projects that would have taken months of needlework like decorating furniture upholstery, bedclothes and hangings.

Since thread was precious, most stitching done in America featured outlined designs rather than solid, filled satin stitches that were common in England at the time.

Included are all the supplies needed to create one pretty drawstring embroidered bag.
